I have recently given up smoking and have an irritating cough, I have to clear my throat regularly and often mucus comes up. Can this be treated?

Mandy B, WA

Congratulations on quitting! Essentially your symptoms are a clear sign that your respiratory system is under pressure and aggravated. The herb Mullein is an ideal remedy for toning the mucous membranes of the respiratory system, reducing inflammation while facilitating the removal of mucus and other unwanted fluids from the respiratory system by coughing them out (this is known as expectoration).

These expectorant properties can assist to relieve coughs and mild lung congestion, Mullein also contains mucilage which has calming, soothing and relaxing properties. Obviously if the cough persists, it could indicate something more serious so a visit to your healthcare practitioner would be advised.

My teenage daughter suffers from acne, I think it could be hormonal as it is worse at certain times of the month, I would prefer she didn't take the pill or antibiotics, is there anything else that could help her?

Elizabeth C, VIC

I would recommend a herbal blood tonic which will help clean impurities from the skin, boost her immune system, speed up healing and improve the elimination of wastes and excessive hormones from her body. Look for a product with skin cleansing herbs such as Red Clover, Yellow Dock, Sarsaparilla and Burdock and the herb Pau D'Arco for its immune boosting and anti-bacterial properties. Dandelion is another important herb as it assists the liver to convert excess hormones so they can be excreted by the body, and Cascara and Buckthorn help keep the bowels regular, an essential step in cleansing her entire system.

In addition to this, teenage girls respond well to the herb Chaste Tree (also known as Vitex) which regulates hormone production and can even relieve symptoms of pre menstrual tension, which may make your life easier as well!

I have bad breath and whatever I try doesn't work unless I use it all the time. Is there anything you can recommend?

Russell C, TAS

The first thing to understand is that your bad breath is coming from within. There may be a number of reasons for bad breath – gum problems, poor digestion, mucus build-up, dry mouth and stress are some possible causes.
Look carefully at what you eat and drink as some foods cause bad breath to linger. Alcohol, coffee, some medications and an excess of processed or sugary foods can all contribute to bad breath. Dairy products act as a thickener of nasal mucus and this may also promote bacteria growth. Garlic and onions contain pungent oils that contribute to bad breath because the oils go to your lungs and out through your mouth. And if you're a smoker that won't help either!

One solution I can suggest is liquid chlorophyll. This is extracted from natural plant sources and works as an internal deodoriser, helping to neutralise body odours. It's non-toxic, soothing and suitable for use by people of all ages. Drink it several times a day and make sure you also drink adequate water and eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. Also, brush and floss your teeth regularly, as bacteria accumulate on the bits of food left between your teeth.
